Make Sparkling Lemon–Mint Water

Choose a drink that works with dinner

Start with the meal's strongest flavor. A rich, creamy pasta often pairs well with a crisp, lightly flavored sparkling water. A salty snack can work with an unsweetened iced tea. For a spicy meal, choose a mild drink and keep citrus optional so each person can adjust their glass. These are taste suggestions rather than nutrition advice.

A simple citrus cooler for two

Combine 2 tablespoons lemon or lime juice with 500 ml cold still or sparkling water. Taste before adding sugar: start with 1 teaspoon dissolved in a little warm water, then adjust. Divide between two glasses and add ice just before serving. If using sparkling water, stir gently and leave space at the top to prevent overflow. Mint or a few cucumber slices add aroma without needing a syrup.

Use what you have

No fresh citrus? Try a small splash of bottled lemon juice, tasting as you go because its strength varies. No mint? Skip it rather than replacing it with a large quantity of dried herbs. For a fruitier version, mash a few washed berries and strain out the seeds if you prefer a smoother texture. Frozen fruit can chill the drink, but follow any preparation instructions on its packet.

Fix an unbalanced glass

If a drink tastes too sweet, dilute a small sample with plain water before changing the whole pitcher. If it is too sharp, add more water first, then a little sweetener if needed. Add ice near serving time: melting ice can flatten a carefully balanced drink. Keep dairy-based drinks refrigerated until serving, and check labels when preparing drinks for someone with allergies.
